Dobson: Time to push on now

George Dobson wants to see the Addicks take confidence from their valiant display at Manchester United into Saturday’s game against Barnsley at The Valley.

Antony’s sublime curler put United in the ascendancy after 21 minutes but Charlton battled away and remained in the game until the final moments, when substitute Marcus Rashford bagged a brace to flatter the scoreline.

Attention now turns to this weekend’s clash against Barnsley at The Valley.

Speaking post-match at Old Trafford, the captain said: “We’re sitting in mid-table at the minute. It’s such a competitive league where everyone beats everyone and it is all about consistency and that has been our problem this season.

“We’ve won the last couple in a row so we’re building a little bit of momentum. Tonight should give us great confidence to make sure that, come Barnsley and the rest of the season, we can really mount a charge and push towards the play-offs.

“To concede the couple of goals late on was disappointing, but we had to go for it,” added the midfielder, reflecting on his side’s performance against Erik ten Hag’s side. “It shows where we are and where we’re capable of pushing such an amazing team with brilliant players and you know you’ve done well when they’re bringing on the likes of [Christian] Eriksen, Rashford and Casemiro.

“We’re so proud of everyone. Bringing 9,000 fans away from home on a Tuesday night without any trains back… we’re just so proud of the whole club. It was a wonderful evening.

“We’re gutted we couldn’t get a goal for them and force the penalties, but it’s been a brilliant experience and it’s one we’ll cherish forever.”
