Garner: "We want a winning culture here"

Ben Garner wants his Charlton side to take the momentum gained from Saturday's victory over Derby County into Tuesday night's Carabao Cup first-round tie against Queens Park Rangers at The Valley (7.45pm KO BST).

Speaking in his Monday press conference at Sparrows Lane, the Manager said: "It was nice to get the home win on Saturday and now hopefully take that into tomorrow night. It's fantastic that it's a Championship side and it's another London club so it should create a good atmosphere. We're looking forward to the game.

"For me personally in this competition we'd always want to play a higher-division team. It gives an opportunity for us to test ourselves and try and take a scalp from a club in a higher division. It should be a good crowd and a good following from their point of view as well.

"The crowd will always play their part and hopefully we can create a good atmosphere on Tuesday night because it certainly helped on Saturday, particularly in that second half. As I've said from day one since I walked in the door, it's a huge strength of ours. It's such a passionate fanbase in south London and this football club means so much to them. Every game we've got that crowd and it makes a big difference."

Garner confirmed he is set to make full use of his squad for the cup clash, with several players having impressed in training.

"We need to utilise the squad," the gaffer said. "There are players that have been training really well and deserve an opportunity to play, but we still want to put a team on the pitch that can win the game. Regardless of how many changes we make within games, between games, the ultimate objective is to still win.

"It provides an opportunity for some players to come in and stake their claim. It gives some more minutes for some that need it.

"Our priority is the league, for sure, but we want to be competitive in every competition that we play in - the league cup, the FA Cup and the EFL Trophy. We want that winning culture here."
