Hills: “We deserved to get something from that game”

Karen Hills

Karen Hills had nothing but praise for her side following the Addicks’ 1-0 triumph over Lewes on Wednesday night. Given the harsh conditions in the evening, Hills admitted her side had to dig deep in order to get a result out of the match.

Charlton took the lead in the 71st minute through the in-form Freda Ayisi who netted her second goal in her last three appearances to retrieve all three points at The Oakwood.

Hills said: “I'm really pleased for the girls. I think the performances over the last couple of games have been there. We've just obviously lost potentially that winning streak by small margins.

“I thought today we deserved a little bit of luck and obviously to hold on the way we did in conditions that were pretty bad was really pleasing.

“As I said to the girls at the end, I couldn't be more proud of them because I thought the first half I thought we dominated, we played some really nice football. We've been playing some great football, but we just haven't had maybe the rub of the green or the quality in the final third.

“Thankfully today we didn't concede, kept a clean sheet and then obviously went on and scored that goal. It was a great result for the girls and somebody that they deserved for the past ten days.

Thanks to Wednesday’s victory, Hills’ side have the opportunity to move up into second place with a win over London City Lionesses on Sunday.

The all-important clash between second and third place could see Charlton overtake their London rivals with a win at the weekend:

“Obviously, like we've got to go back and just look at this game first and foremost. Make sure that we're recovering as soon as we possibly can. But we've got that winning feeling, we've got that confidence.

"As I said, we're playing some great football at the moment and we deserved to get something from that game and to win that game tonight. Just solely on the number of games that we played in such a short space of time.

I think the girls have been tremendous, they’ve worked together, I thought the subs we made had an impact and made a difference."
