Holden: A clean sheet is massive for us

Dean Holden claps supporters

Dean Holden was full of praise for his side for digging in and coming away with three points in a 2-0 win against Barnsley at The Valley.

While the visitors had much of the possession, it was the Addicks who looked more dangerous and earned an important three points.

Speaking to CharltonTV after the game, Holden said: “It was a rollercoaster, it wasn’t perfect. I don’t think perfect ever exists in football. I’m really pleased with the three points first and foremost. A clean sheet is massive for us, for our mentality. To win like we did in the end – they had some chances, I’m not going to pretend it was all pretty, they hit the bar twice in the first half. Ash has made a really big save at that point and we stayed in the game – we needed to.

“We scored two fantastic goals from our point of view. The first one we got a good shape behind the ball, Payney wins the ball, plays forward, which is what we’ve talked about every day and gets young Tyreece in, who wasn’t even in the squad in the last game. I just mentioned to him, that you never know when your chance is coming and he’s come in and been fantastic for us today.

“Second one, Aaron Henry, with almost his first touch, gets Macauley Bonne in with a fantastic pass. Macauley drifts, like good strikers do and ends up in the middle of the goal for the shot. Jes finishes it off. All in all it was a really pleasing victory.”
