Charlie Kelman has scored some important goals for the Addicks this season and will have felt the pressure in the third minute of stoppage-time as he stood over a crucial penalty.
The striker calmly dispatched the spot kick to earn Charlton a big point in a 1-1 draw at Oxford United.
“It was a high pressure penalty but those are the moments you live for as a player,” he explained. “So I’m buzzing. It’s not the result we wanted but if you’d have given us a seven-point week at the start of the week, I’m sure many fans would have taken that.
“It’s a big week for us. At the start of the week we were on 41 points, now we’re on 48 and we’ve got another big game before the international break. Things are looking positive for us, we just want to keep moving in the right direction and keep evolving. We’ve been better in recent weeks and that’s reflected in our results and we take that into next week.”
Kelman struck the crucial penalty low to the goalkeeper’s right to score his sixth goal of the season.
On taking the penalty he said: “I enjoy that, I enjoy the stadium, I enjoy the boos, I enjoy everyone talking, that’s something that really gets me going. I’m happy with the penalty, happy with the goal but disappointed.”
The goal was the American’s second of the week, after netting against Birmingham City on Saturday.
“I’m pleased, now I’m starting to find a bit of form,” he said with a smile. “I should have scored on Wednesday but that’s the life of a striker. I’m more disappointed when I’m not getting chances than missing them.
“A few of the boys on the other team [Oxford] are pals of mine so it was nice. Scoring a goal, I always say it, is the best feeling in football, so hopefully there are many more to come.”
The Addicks are back at The Valley on Saturday for the visit of Norwich City.
Kelman added: “I think our fans have been brilliant all year. We love playing there. I was already thinking about it [the fans] when I put the ball down. They were very loud all afternoon, a seven-point week, we can’t ask for much more than that.”
