Six standout academy graduates since the Addicks' Premier League era

Ahead of Saturday’s Academy Day fixture against Norwich City, we take a look back at six standout Academy graduates since the Addicks' Premier League era.

Jonjo Shelvey 

Shelvey joined the Addicks' academy in 2004, and made his senior debut in 2008, becoming the club's youngest ever senior player at the age of 16 years and 59 days. 

The midfielder totalled 49 league and cup appearances for Charlton, netting eight goals throughout. Shelvey impressed throughout his time at The Valley and was voted Player of the Year at the end of the 2008/09 season. 

As well as becoming the club's youngest ever player, he became the Addicks' youngest ever goalscorer when he netted in an FA Cup tie against Norwich City in 2009, before signing for Premier League giants Liverpool in 2010. 

Shelvey enjoyed a successful spell with Swansea City and was also a winner of the EFL Championship with Newcastle United in 2016/17. He totalled 278 appearances in the Premier League and received six caps for England. 

The latter stages of his career took him to the Turkish Süper Lig, before returning back to England with Burnley. He most recently signed with UAE Second Division side Arabian Falcons.

Nick Pope 

Nick Pope's career began at Bury Town before he joined Charlton’s academy at U18s in 2011. 

He excelled between the sticks for the Addicks’ U21s before progressing to the first team.

He was handed his first-team debut in 2013, in a 4-1 win over Bristol City and went on to make 38 league and cup appearances in total for Charlton before signing for newly-promoted Premier League side Burnley in 2016. 

He spent six years in Lancashire before signing for Newcastle in 2022, becoming a League Cup winner with the Magpies in the 2024/25 season. 

The shot-stopper has 243 Premier League appearances to his name so far, with 10 caps and seven clean sheets for England.

Ademola Lookman 

Lookman was spotted while playing in a London FA match against the Addicks’ U16s and the club wasted no time in plucking him from the obscurity of Sunday football to The Valley at the age of 16. 

He rose quickly through the academy ranks with an impressive goalscoring record for both the U18s and U21s. 

After making his debut against MK Dons last n the Championship in November 2015, Lookman netted his first senior goal in style against Brighton & Hove Albion weeks later and went on to feature 49 times for Charlton, scoring 12 goals, earning himself the the club’s Young Player of the Year award in 2016. 

The forward made the move to the Premier League with Everton for a club-record fee for an academy graduate in January 2017 and went on to represent Fulham, RB Leipzig and Leicester City, before signing for Serie A side Atalanta in 2022. 

Lookman put himself on the stage of one of the world’s hottest properties while in Italy, scoring his first senior hat-trick for Atalanta in the 2024 Europa League final, beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. 

His stellar performance on the main stage earned him a Ballon d'Or nominationand he has since made a switch to La Liga with Atletico Madrid in February 2026 and is now a Champions League quarter-finalist with the Spanish club. 

Having represented England at youth level, he is now a regular for Nigeria’s senior side with 41 caps and 11 goals to his name.

Joe Gomez 

Gomez joined Charlton at U10 level and progressed through the academy at Sparrows Lane. 

After breaking through to the first team as a 17-year-old, he went on to make 24 appearances in league and cup competitions for the Addicks during the 2014/15 season. 

Gomez's breakout season impressed many, and he was awarded the club's Young Player of the Year award in 2015.

His talent was quickly noticed by those in the Premier League and he signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2015, where he has remained ever since. 

A series of injuries have hampered Gomez at stages throughout his career, but the defender has still racked up 266 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions. 

He is a Champions League winner and a two-time Premier League Winner and also has FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup titles to his name during his time in Merseyside, making him the Addicks’ most-decorated academy graduate.

Gomez's performances and versatility in defence has earned him 15 senior caps for England.

Ezri Konsa 

Konsa's footballing journey started when was scouted and signed for Charlton at the age of 11. 

He progressed through the academy at Sparrows Lane and was a key part of the club’s all-conquering U18 and U21 sides before making 86 appearances for the Addicks, making his senior debut in 2016. 

While with Charlton, he was part of the England side which won the FIFA U20 World Cup alongside fellow Addicks alumni Ademola Lookman.

Konsa departed Charlton in 2018, making the move to West London to sign for then-Championship outfit Brentford. 

The defender spent a year with the Bees, before earning a move to the Premier League with Aston Villa. 

Konsa has become a mainstay at the heart of the Villa defence and has made 226 Premier League appearances for the West Midlands side. 

He has earned 17 caps for England to date. Konsa received a call-up from Thomas Tuchel and forms a part of the current Three Lions squad for next week's fixtures.

Joe Aribo 

Aribo's career began at Staines Town, before he joined the development squad at Sparrows Lane. 

The midfielder played at U21s level for the Addicks, before making his debut in the first-team in 2016. 

He played 97 times throughout his time at Charlton and was a key part of Lee Bowyer's 2018/19 promotion-winning side. 

With his contract up following the success at Wembley, Aribo left to join Scottish giants Rangers at the beginning of the 2019/20 season.

He went onto score the opening goal for Rangers in their 2022 Europa League final, before later falling to defeat on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt. 

He then joined Premier League side Southampton on a four-year deal, and played 53 times for the Saints in the top flight. He experienced promotion back to the top flight with Southampton via the play-offs in 2024 and is currently on loan at Leicester City. 

Aribo was first called up to international duty for Nigeria in 2019, and has earned 34 caps for his country since, scoring twice.
