U18 REPORT | Charlton 5 Cardiff City 1

'

Charlton’s U18s secured an emphatic 5-1 victory win over Cardiff City on Tuesday afternoon, as they head towards the play-off stage of the Professional Development League.

Trialist, Ed Thomas, Kayode Peterkin and Kacper Podgorny were all on the scoresheet for the young Addicks as they lifted their PDL South trophy in the Sparrows Lane sunshine.

The Trialist opened the scoring for Jason Pearce’s side inside two minutes, latching on to a superb long ball from Chetam Ezenwata and firing an excellent strike beyond Samuel Lloyd-Jones from outside the box.

Cardiff had the chance to level the scoring before half-time, as Mannie Barton had a shot from range that whistled just wide of the post.

It took the young Addicks just two minutes into the second half to double their advantage. Ed Thomas won the ball back brilliantly in midfield and drove at goal, before calmly slotting a fine finish into the bottom corner.

The Bluebirds got a goal back on the hour mark through a penalty. Phoenix Valentine was adjudged to have committed a foul in the box, with Barton converting the spot-kick.

On 68 minutes, Peterkin netted to restore the young Addicks' two-goal cushion. Thomas played a ball through to Peterkin, who tucked it away to make it 3-1.

Substitute Podgorny added to Charlton’s lead just three minutes later with a neat effort into that nestled into the bottom corner.

Seven minutes before full-time, Peterkin added a second goal to his tally and capped off a fine afternoon for Charlton. The ball fell to him in the box after a deflected shot, which he poked home from close range.

Jason Pearce’s side are back in action for their final league game of the season away to Sheffield Wednesday on Friday (KO 2pm BST), before their play-off campaign begins.
