U21 CUP REPORT | Charlton 0 Wolves 2

'

Charlton's U21s concluded their Premier League Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat against Wolves at Princes Park on Monday night.

Second-half strikes from Leonardo Lopes and Tom Edozie saw the visitors claim victory in the final fixture in Group C, though neither side were able to secure qualification to the knockout stages with Bournemouth and Norwich City already progressing.

Wolves came close to opening the scoring through Marvin Kaleta inside the opening four minutes as the full-back latched onto a ball over the top of the Addicks' defence and honed in on goal, before firing wide from close range.

The visitors continued to press for the opening goal early on and, just moments later, the ball was slotted towards the penalty spot for Fletcher Holman to strike goalwards, forcing an important save from Prince Adegoke.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Ryan Huke let fly from the edge of the box, dragging his shot wide of the post and out for a goal-kick.

Almost instantaneously, Wolves attacked with pace up the other end and Adegoke was called into action once again as Matty Whittingham wrapped a left-footed effort towards the far post, forcing a fingertip save from the Charlton stopper.

Henry Rylah then thundered two attempts over the bar and, at the other end, Adegoke was on hand to make yet another all-important save in the countdown to the interval, denying an almost certain goal from Josh Esen.

Esen came close to breaking the deadlock shortly after the restart, receiving the ball inside the Charlton box and hammering an effort goalwards, but, again, Adegoke was equal to it.

Lewys Benjamin soon produced a smart stop at the other end, tipping Toby Bower's free-kick over his crossbar.

Wolves took the lead on 69 minutes through Lopes, who slotted Esen's cross into the bottom corner.

The west Midlands side doubled their advantage nine minutes later as Edozie capitalised on a loose pass, beat a red shirt and fired home.

Up next for Chris Lock’s side is a London Senior Cup tie at Welling United on Wednesday night (KO 7pm).
