Speaking after the game he said: “I thought it was a very good game. Two good teams, trying to play the game in the right way.”

“I felt we deserved to win the game. At 2-0, Ben Amos hadn’t touched the ball and then it was 2-2 out of nowhere. We regrouped at half-time and got the win.”

“Sometimes that happens in football. We didn’t do a lot wrong, but sometimes you have to appreciate the touch and the finish of the opposition.”

Ben Purrington gave Charlton an early lead and Conor Washington scored twice but the Addicks conceded for the first time in more than nine hours of football with Ched Evans scoring twice in a minute in the first half.

Bowyer said: “Tonight, the strikers helped out the defenders. It’s been the other way round in recent weeks.”

“I’m really proud of the players. They’ve been running on empty and they’ve earned a little break now.”

“We’re well ahead of where we should be. Some of these players didn’t have a pre-season and they’re getting fitter and better.”
