WOMEN'S REPORT | Charlton 1 Lewes 1

The Addicks are unbeaten in four as Charlton gained a point against Lewes at The Oakwood on Sunday afternoon.

Jess King’s 49th minute opener against her former club was cancelled out moments later as a defensive mix up between Grace Coombs and Eartha Cumings allowed Ini Umotong to slot home.

The Addicks started off on the front foot with a few early chances. Ella Rutherford made a brilliant interception 30-yards from goal and took aim, but Tatiana Saunders got down well to make the save.

Just a minute later Charlton had an excellent chance to take the lead. King won the ball in the Lewes half, dribbled forward and drilled the ball across goal but Shauan Vassell was unable to get a touch on the ball for what would have been a certain goal.

In the 21st minute Rutherford cut the ball across goal for Charley Clifford, but Lewes managed to clear their lines before Clifford could strike.

Shortly after, Charlton were wasteful with a corner which then led to a Lewes counter attack however Olivia Smith did brilliantly to prevent Lewes from having a clear chance at goal, with Lucy Ashworth-Clifford eventually dragging an effort wide.

Cumings did well throughout the first half to comfortably claim a number of crosses.

The Addicks got the opener on 49 minutes as Saunders spilled a Rutherford free-kick into the path of King who slammed the ball home to make it 1-0 to Charlton.

Charlton’s joy was short lived as Lewes equalised on 53 minutes. Charlton failed to deal with a long ball over the top and Coombs’ header back towards Cumings was too weak, with Umotong there to capitalise and grab an equaliser.

The Addicks did well defensively but didn’t make the most of the rest of their attacking opportunities in the second half. Neither side had any clear cut chances for the remainder of the match.

Results elsewhere mean the bottom half of the table remains a tight battle, with Coventry beating London City the midlanders are just a point behind the Addicks, who remain ninth in the league.

The Addicks face Sheffield United next week as they look to stretch their unbeaten run to five.
