MATCH PREVIEW | Charlton v Portsmouth

After two successive games on the road, the Addicks return to The Valley to take on Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon (3pm).

Nigel Adkins’ men will be looking to build on their performance against Gillingham in midweek, having left Kent with a share of the spoils in a game of two halves at Priestfield.

TEAM NEWS

Adkins will be without injured trio Ryan Inniss (thigh), Jake Forster-Caskey (ACL) and Ronnie Schwartz (calf), while Conor Washington (ankle) will be assessed having been forced off during the interval in midweek.

Long-term absentees Liam Vincent (shin) Jayden Reid (knee) remain unavailable for the visitors, with Pompey captain Clark Robertson also set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines having recently gained a specialist on a tendon issue in his hip sustained during a training session.

Danny Cowley is, however, hopeful of welcoming back Connor Ogilvie (quad) back to his matchday 18.

THE OPPOSITION

Having won their opening three league fixtures to nil against Fleetwood Town, Crewe Alexandra and Shrewsbury Town respectively, Portsmouth are now without a triumph in their last five League One outings.

Cowley’s side travel to the capital buoyed by Sean Raggett’s last-gasp leveller against Plymouth Argyle in a frantic midweek clash at Fratton Park. That came after Ryan Hardie had gifted the Pilgrims a 2-1 lead with a second-half brace, cancelling out Lee Brown’s low drilled free-kick.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Charlton and Portsmouth have clashed on 110 previous occasions in all competitions with the Addicks winning 37, Pompey 46 and the remaining 27 encounters resulting in stalemates.

Last season’s meeting at The Valley in February saw the visitors run out 3-1 victors. Michael Jacobs’ opener six minutes before the interval was offset by a Jayden Stockley header early in the second period, only for Pompey to restore their lead three minutes later through skipper Tom Naylor, with Andy Cannon adding a third just after the hour mark.

MATCH OFFICIALS

Anthony Coggins will be the man in the middle in SE7 on Saturday afternoon. The referee last officiated the Addicks during the 1-0 triumph over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park in April 2019, with club captain Jason Pearce volleying home the only goal of the night on 35 minutes.

Coggins will be assisted by Geoffrey Russell and Kevin Howick, while Adrian Tranter is the Fourth Official.
