PAPA JOHN’S TROPHY PREVIEW | Leyton Orient v Charlton

Charlton conclude their Papa John’s Trophy group stage campaign on Tuesday evening (7pm), when they travel to the Breyer Group Stadium to face Leyton Orient.

With both sides having already qualified for the knockout stage, the tie will decide who claims top spot in Southern Group G.

TEAM NEWS

The Addicks will be without long-term absentees Sam Lavelle (groin), Ryan Inniss (quad) and Jake Forster-Caskey (ACL), though Adam Matthews (calf) and Jonathan Leko (hip) will be monitored.

Chris Gunter (Wales) and Conor Washington (Northern Ireland) are unavailable, however, having linked up with their respective countries for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, with club captain Jason Pearce suspended.

The hosts, meanwhile, will check on the fitness of Adam Thompson (ankle) and Callum Reilly (groin).

THE OPPOSITION

The O’s have already safely navigated their way through to the knockout phase of the Papa John’s Trophy, having followed up a 1-0 win over Southampton U21s with a convincing 4-0 victory against Crawley Town.

In league action, Kenny Jackett’s side are currently enjoying a five-game unbeaten run, leaving them sat sixth in the fourth tier and firmly amongst the play-off picture.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Charlton and Orient have squared off on 51 previous occasions with the Addicks winning 22, the O’s 18 and the remaining 11 encounters resulting in draws.

The last meeting between the two sides came in November 2020 as a young Addicks side triumphed 3-1 at The Valley thanks to strikes from Wassim Aouachria, Jay Mingi and Marcus Maddison.

Charlton’s last visit to Orient, meanwhile, came in League One in December 2011. Having seen Ben Hamer dismissed just six minutes into proceedings, the Addicks fell to a 1-0 defeat with Matthew Spring’s effort on 25 minutes proving the difference.

MATCH OFFICIALS

Sam Purkiss will oversee proceedings on Tuesday night. The official last refereed a Charlton fixture in April 2021 - a club record-equalling away league victory at Plymouth Argyle.

Purkiss will be assisted by Daniel Cook and Paul Lister, while Lisa Benn is the Fourth Official.

COLOURS

The Addicks will be sporting their white and black away strip at the Breyer Group Stadium.
