Purrington pleased to be amongst the goals

Match-winner Ben Purrington is pleased to be adding goals to his game after bagging his third of the season against Burton Albion on Saturday.

The left-back scored the only goal of the game as the Addicks extended their unbeaten league run to four games under Johnnie Jackson with 10 points taken from 12.

And speaking to CharltonTV following the victory, he explained his delight at doing his part for the team since regaining his place in the starting XI.

“I’m not really known for scoring goals,” said Purrington.

“But this year I’ve been getting a few more to help the team out and adding to my tally. I should have had a few more this season, as well.

“I’m on three this year in seven games – it’s about getting into the box, getting into good positions and, luckily, I got it on my head and it’s gone in.”

As well as getting the winning goal, the defender played his part towards a third clean sheet in four league games – a fact that was equally as pleasing.

“We’ve shown that we’re a good, combative unit back there,” beamed Purrington.

“We’re getting to know each other. Obviously, when you keep a solid, settled team with the same faces, you build relationships on the pitch. I’m playing with Akin [Famewo] now and before there was a lot of chopping and changing.

“You can see that we know how each other play now, we went 1-0 up, we’re covering each other and bailing each other out if one of makes a mistake.”

Meanwhile, Purrington praised the impact made by Caretaker Manager Jackson in recent weeks with the Addicks’ season finally heading in the right direction following a difficult start to the 2021/22 campaign.

“I can’t begin to explain how different it feels out there on the pitch,” he said.

“You can probably see that watching it – it’s a completely different story, we know what we’re doing in and out of possession, it’s mainly about our press, to be honest. We’re on the front foot.

“Jacko’s done a really good job, working through the week adapting to how different teams play and, hopefully, we can just keep this run going.”
