Charlton’s U21s twice came from behind to round off their season with a 2-2 draw against Peterborough United at Sparrows Lane.

The visitors made a fast start and were ahead after five minutes. Neah Freeman’s cross from the right was diverted up into the air by Trialist Bill Heaps, and at the second attempt Heaps was able to volley over Prince Adegoke from six yards out.

But Chris Lock’s side grew into the game and by the end of the half were well on top. The equaliser nearly came in the 39th minute when Ryan Huke pulled back for Patrick Casey, who saw his effort cleared off the line.

The young Addicks would not have to wait much longer. On the stroke of half-time, Casey returned the favour and Huke, on the left side of the area, dinked over Jake West in the Peterborough goal to ensure the teams would go in level at the break.

In the second period, Charlton continued where they had left off. In the 58th minute they were very nearly ahead when Casey fed Euan Williams, but the latter was denied by West.

Against the run of play, Posh went back in front in the 76th minute when Adegoke rushed out of his goal to deal with a long ball and was dispossessed by Joe Davies. The ball broke to Donay O’Brien-Brady, who rolled it into the empty net.

But the young Addicks responded well once again, drawing level with four minutes to go. Aaron Henry’s corner from the left flashed just past Tolu Ladapo and all the way in at the far post to claim a well-deserved point.

It was the last game of the season for the U21s, and all eyes are now on the U18s as they take on Barnsley in the Professional Development League play-off semi-final on Saturday.
