Charlton 2 Peterborough United 1

It was another late show for the Addicks as Nathan Jones' side secured their fifth win in six games to move to fifth place in Sky Bet League One.

Matty Godden opened the scoring from the penalty spot shortly after half time, his fourth successive game on the scoresheet, before Malik Mothersille’s equaliser. Macaulay Gillesphey was the match-winner, heading home in the final minute of the game to the delight of the Covered End.

Again Nathan Jones named an unchanged starting lineup, handing Conor Coventry his 50th appearance for the club in the process.

After a slow start the Addicks seized control and peppered the Peterborough goal for much of the second half of the opening 45.

The in-form Godden forced a smart save from former Addick Jed Steer before Luke Berry hit over from Thierry Small’s cross.

Godden then set Tyreece Campbell free but the 21-year-old couldn’t generate the power to beat Steer.

Berry’s curled effort from the edge of the area bounced back off the post before Steer showing quick reactions to keep out Godden’s swivelled volley. Edwards was next to come close, dragging wide on the second attempt after.

An unfortunate injury to Posh’s Gustav Lindgren delayed the game and forced a substitution which slowed the Addicks’ positive momentum.

Charlton got the goal they deserved at the start of the second half, when referee Lee Swabey pointed to the spot after Campbell’s shot hit the arm of Posh defender Sam Hughes. Godden stepped up and while Steer dived left and got a hand to the penalty, he was never keeping out the powerful shot as Godden netted his 13th of the season.

Three minutes later Peterborough were reduced to 10 men when Emmanuel Fernandez was shown his marching orders.

The visitors got a surprise equaliser when Kayne Ramsay was adjudged to have fouled Ricky-Jade Jones when through on goal. Mothersille sent Ashley Maynard-Brewer the wrong way with a low penalty.

Going against 10-men the chances came for the Addicks, Gillesphey’s header was saved, Ramsay’s header blocked, while Small and Godden both failed to get enough power in their shots to trouble the busy Steer.

In the final minute Campbell’s perfect cross was met by Docherty but his header was blocked behind. From the resulting corner the Addicks’ deserved goal came. Subsitute Alex Gilbert pinged a deep set-piece onto the head of Gillesphey, who moving away from goal, found the bottom corner of the net with a wonderfully-placed header.

The result makes it six wins from seven games at The Valley for the Addicks, who travel to top-of-the-table Birmingham City on Saturday.
