Charlton 3 Burton Albion 1
The Addicks finished the season fourth Sky Bet League One with a 3-1 victory over Burton Albion at The Valley
Matty Godden netted twice and Alex Mitchell scored a second-half header as Nathan Jones’ finished the regular season taking their unbeaten home run to 15 games.
The win means the Addicks will face Wycombe Wanderers over two legs in the League One play-off semi-finals.
Mason Bennett gave the visitors an early lead from the penalty spot, sending Ashley Maynard-Brewer the wrong way after the Addicks’ stopper had been booked for bringing down for bringing down Fabio Tavares after he had capitalised on a short back pass from Mitchell.
The defender made immediate amends, winning the ball back with a strong challenge before finding Tennai Watson on the right wing. Watson's first time pass in behind the Burton defence was perfect for Godden. With plenty to do, Godden rounded goalkeeper Max Crocombe before finishing, with confidence, from a tight angle.
The in-form striker doubled his tally in the 34th minute, as he demonstrated a wonderful bit of skill to get away from his defender after excellently controlling a long Josh Edwards ball. Godden then slid a low, left-footed shot into the back of the net for his 21st goal of the season.
Burton made a double change to start the second half and Charlie Websiter forced Maynard-Brewer to tip a well-placed, free kick over the crossbar in the second minute after the break.
The Addicks then wrestled back control and six minutes into the second half had their third. A cleared corner fell to Conor Coventry who did well to create room for himself on the left wing. The midfielder’s cross was perfect and Mitchell got his head to it first to finish from six yards out.
The chances continued to come with Alex Gilbert guiding just wide after a long throw fell to him and Crocombe got down excellently to keep out a Macaulay Gillesphey header.
Academy starlet Ibrahim Fullah came on for his Charlton debut and nearly had the perfect start, curling a shot onto the crossbar.
It was Valley Gold and Academy Day at The Valley and Fullah and Kai Enslin’s introductions marked another excellent day for the academy with six graduates representing Nathan Jones’ side on the day.
