Addicks fall to narrow defeat against Derby

Charlton 1 Derby County 2

The Addicks suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat to Derby County at The Valley on Tuesday evening in the Sky Bet Championship.

Tyreece Campbell scored an excellent goal with 23 minutes remaining to bring Charlton back into the game after going two goals behind but despite the late sending off of Derby's Matt Clarke, the Addicks weren't quite able to find an equaliser.

The first clear cut chance of the game fell to Nathan Jones' side. After some lovely play in the middle of the park Campbell clipped a ball into the box that was headed just over the bar by Lyndon Dykes.

The visitors had their noses in front on 17 minutes, as Macauley Gillesphey inadvertently turned Patrick Agyemang’s dragged shot into the back of the net.

Sonny Carey tested Richard O’Donnell on 31 minutes from a free-kick, but his effort couldn’t find its way past the Derby keeper. At half-time, the Addicks trailed 0-1.

Despite some sustained possession for Jones' side at the start of the second half, the next big chance fell to the visitors. Bobby Clark played a neat one-two with Ben Brereton-Diaz to get in behind the Charlton defence and doubled Derby’s advantage 15 minutes into the second half.

Campbell brought the Addicks back into to the contest seven minutes later. He played a smart one-two with Karoy Anderson before driving a beautiful low shot into the bottom corner, from outside the penalty area, to half the deficit.

Derby were reduced to ten men late on, as Clarke was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Kayne Ramsay.

The Addicks pushed for an equaliser during the seven minutes of stoppage time, but were unable to find the cutting edge, as the visitors came away with all three points.
