Addicks secure Championship status with win over Hull City

Charlton 2 Hull City 1

Charlton secured their Sky Bet Championship status at The Valley on Saturday afternoon, with a 2-1 win against Hull City, thanks to two superb goals from Charlie Kelman and Jayden Fevrier.

The Addicks made a positive start in SE7. Charlton’s first clear-cut chance of the game came in the 15th minute after some excellent work from Kelman, who got the better of John Egan down the right-hand side. The ball reached Conor Coady just outside the box, who hit his effort first time, but his attempt was gathered by Ivor Pandur with Harvey Knibbs closing in.

Kelman had ran the show in the opening stages of the game and got his reward inside 22 minutes, putting the Addicks a goal to the good in some style. Coady’s ball from midfield found Kelman up front, who did brilliantly to hold the ball up, beating Semi Ajayi in the process. He cut inside and unleashed a sensational strike, that curled into the top corner and left Pandur with no chance.

On 27 minutes, Nathan Jones was forced into his first change, as Collins Sichenje pulled up and couldn’t continue, with Reece Burke entering the fray.

Macaulay Gillesphey had half a chance to double Charlton’s lead, as he received a ball on the half-turn inside the penalty area from Coady, but his strike was a tame one, straight into the gloves of Pandur.

Kelman was again causing trouble for the Hull defence and got away from Lewie Coyle, who was shown a yellow card for pulling the forward down.

Joe Gelhardt had a chance to level the scoring for Hull just before the break but fired his shot wide of the target.

Hull had pressured the Addicks in the latter stages of the first half, and equalised just before the whistle, as John Egan headed the ball home from close range following a corner. The two sides went in level at the break.

Harvey Knibbs had a glorious chance to put the Addicks back ahead in the opening phases of the second half. Jayden Fevrier played an excellent ball into Knibbs, but it just evaded him.

The gaffer made a double substitution just after the hour mark, as Luke Chambers and Tyreece Campbell were brought on in place of Sonny Carey and Knibbs.

The Addicks had to soak up pressure from the visitors in the second half but got themselves back in front through Fevrier in the 68th minute. Fevrier brought the ball down superbly and danced his way towards the box, before calmly placing it into the bottom corner with a fine finish.

Lyndon Dykes was brought on in place of Kelman to help the Addicks see out the game, and forced a fine save out of Pandur minutes after coming on.

The fourth official added six minutes of stoppage time at the end of the 90, as the Addicks looked to claim all three points in SE7.

Fevrier came close to putting the game beyond doubt in the closing moments, running the length of the pitch with an open goal in front of him, but his effort was cleared off the line.

The win means that the Addicks have secured next season's place in the second tier with a game to spare ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Swansea City.
