Bree: 'I'm feeling confident and really enjoying it'

James Bree has enjoyed an impressive start to life with the Addicks after joining on loan from Southampton on deadline day.

The defender endeared himself to the Charlton faithful with an outstanding full debut at Bramall Lane that saw him voted as the fans' Player of the Match after providing a wonderful assist for Tanto Olaofe's dramatic winner.

"I was buzzing," the 27-year-old smiled. "It's been a bit of a tough pre-season getting injured right at the end, so I've not played much football for the last six weeks or so. I felt really good going into the game - I wasn't sure if I was going to play the full 90, but I surprised myself with how good I felt really. I'm obviously really happy with the assist and how I played, but I just think there's a few things and a bit of rustiness that I need to get off and then I can just keep going and play really well.

"I've settled in really well. All of the lads have been really welcoming and I obviously know quite a few of the boys and a lot of the staff as well from previous clubs. They've all been really good and the boys that I've not met have brought me in and looked after me. It always helps to play and a get a win under your belt straight away. That helps to settle you in a little bit quicker so I'm feeling confident and really enjoying it."

Bree is now enjoying his third spell under Nathan Jones, who signed the versatile defender for both Luton Town and Southampton previously.

"Obviously it came down to the last day and it was something that came about quite late for me and for the gaffer as well," explained Bree. "I think he was waiting for me to become available and I did with a couple of days left. Once we started speaking I was always confident that we were going to get it through and thankfully we did.

"To be fair to the gaffer I think he'd have been raging at me if I went anywhere else! He's been a massive influence on my career so far and I think I've played my best football underneath him. I enjoy working with him, I know how he works and what he likes to do and I think that suits me really well. Once I had the chance to work with him again it was something that I wanted to do."
