Campbell strikes as Addicks earn point at Birmingham

-

Charlton claimed a hard-fought point from a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City at St Andrew’s on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind to Christoph Klarer’s header midway through the first half, the Addicks fought back brilliantly, with second-half sub Tyreece Campbell firing the visitors level with his first goal of the season.

The Blues registered the first shot early on when Alex Cochrane tried his luck from distance, stinging the palms of Thomas Kaminski who parried away the effort, before the visitors cleared their lines.

On 23 minutes, another shot from a similar distance came even closer for the home side when Demarai Gray hit the base of the left-hand upright with a low effort, while Marvin Ducksch’s follow-up was, thankfully, tame.

Four minutes later, however, Birmingham got their goal. A free-kick delivered from the right was met by the head of Christoph Klarer, with the defender powerfully diverting the ball into the top right-hand corner.

Just after the half-hour mark, Charlton had a glorious opportunity to draw level when Tanto Olaofe pounced on Ryan Allsop’s misplaced pass out to tee up Miles Leaburn 10 yards from goal, but he could only fire over the bar.

Shortly after, the Addicks came close again when a corner delivery was nodded down for Olaofe, who hooked an effort just over the bar.

Nathan Jones’ men had finished the half strongly and started in similar fashion in the second period, enjoying the lions’ share of possession and knocking on the door, without necessarily creating anything clear cut.

That would change in the 65th minute when Jones made a double switch, introducing Campbell and Joe Rankin-Costello off the bench. Moments later, Charlton were level thanks to Campbell’s first touches.

Olaofe was the creator, getting down the right before leaving Klarer for dead, putting the bal through his legs to get into the box and deliver a killer, low ball into the six-yard box.

Blues’ stopper Ryan Allsop batted it away, but only as far as Campbell, who took a touch before drilling his shot into the bottom corner for his first goal of the season.

It was the least the Addicks deserved for their efforts, but the leveller sparked a bit of life into the home side, who came close to regaining their lead on 72 minutes when Demarai Gray drove forwards and rattled the crossbar with a shot from 20 yards.

In truth, Charlton had limited the home side to efforts from distance and Gray tried his luck again with a free-kick just outside box in the 90th minute. His strike was heading for the top right-hand corner, but Thomas Kaminski was equal to it.

Blues sub Lewis Koumas also sent a glancing header just past the post in injury-time, but the Addicks would hold firm to come away from the Midlands with a fully-deserved point.

Charlton return to action at The Valley next Saturday as they host Oxford United in SE7.
