Docherty: 'Leading this team is a great honour'

Captain Greg Docherty was thrilled with his side's midweek performance on Teesside and is looking forward to Saturday's clash against Oxford United.

The 29-year-old was a standout performer on Wednesday as the Addicks claimed a 1-0 victory over high-flying Middlesbrough.

"It was a fantastic win and I thought we were good value for it as well," Docherty said. "We showed what we're all about, we showed a different side to our game. A few people said to me after the game that it was a proper Charlton performance and it felt like that.

"It's good that we backed up the win over Birmingham at the weekend and it sets us up nicely going into a quick turnaround with the Oxford game on Saturday."

The Addicks' midfield worked tirelessly at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday as Charlton claimed all three points.

"Conor [Coventry] and I have always blended in really well together since I came to the club and we started playing together. We built a really good relationship last year and Sonny [Carey] has added to that as well. We thrive on playing against good players and testing ourselves. We want to be known as some of the better midfielders in the league as well, so we relish these occasions."

Docherty, who captained the Addicks to promotion last season, expressed his pride at leading the Addicks in the Championship.

"I understand the privilege of captaining this club and being captain of this club in the Championship," he explained. "That was probably the main thing why I came last year - the opportunity to do that and get the club to this level and have nights like the other night.

"You see the crowd we got on a Wednesday night away and it's incredible. It's worth it when you see their faces afterwards and how happy they were. Having the armband is a privilege and leading this team is a great honour.

"You heard the supporters throughout the whole game on Wednesday and they helped us. It's a cliché, but they're the 12th man. They're always there. Saturday's going to be a sold out [away] end and we love it. It drives us on and it shows how big this club is because we sell out most away ends. We stop off at services on the way home and we always see them. It's great to interact with them, particularly when we win and we give them positive results."

Looking ahead to Saturday's test, Docherty said: "Oxford have obviously got a different manager [since the reverse fixture] and they've found form at a really good time, but so have we.

"We're two teams that ultimately probably at the start of the season wanted the same thing. They've picked up some fantastic results - to win three games in a row in this league is no mean feat. As you can see, it's not easy.

"We're going there full of confidence and they'll be full of confidence as well, so it's got all the makings of being a great game. We're relishing it. It's notoriously been a tough place to go, I've always found it difficult going there so I know exactly what we're going to be coming up against. We're under no illusions as to how difficult the game is going to be."
