Game-changer Bakinson buzzing with first goal

Tyreeq Bakinson celebrates

Tyreeq Bakinson took the role of game-changer on Tuesday evening, scoring six minutes after coming onto the pitch.

The midfielder's 79th-minute goal, his first for the Addicks, put Charlton ahead in a crucial 3-1 away win at Cheltenham Town which moves Nathan Jones’ side seven points clear of the relegation zone and up to 14th in Sky Bet League One.

Speaking to CharltonTV after the game, Bakinson said: "I’m absolutely buzzing. I think right now we need to get points on the board. I think we’ve played well enough in some games to deserve the three points and we haven’t quite got there. We’ve been unbeaten for a while but I’m buzzing to get over the line and help the team to three points.”

The goal itself came after skipper George Dobson retrieved the ball just inside the Charlton half before crossing for Bakinson who did the rest.

“I was obviously facing the wrong way,” Bakinson explained. “I just wanted to control it towards the goal and get a strike on target. I was buzzing for it to go in.”

Jones said post-match that he was pleased for Bakinson, who hasn’t played in Charlton’s last two games and the midfielder explained the togetherness in the squad has played a part in the recent upturn in form.

He said: “I think it is a really tight-knit squad. Obviously everyone is together, everyone knows it’s all for the same ultimate goal to get this club back where we need to be - higher up in the table. We’ve got a really strong squad, everyone is battling for positions, I think that helps. It’s a great win for the squad, everyone is working so hard towards the same goals.

“I feel like in the changing room we’ve been talking about building on what we’ve been doing. The fans have seen it as well in the performances. We’re really happy to start getting those wins.”
