DONE DEAL | Tyreeq Bakinson joins on loan

Charlton Athletic are thrilled to announce the loan signing of Tyreeq Bakinson from Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season.

The dynamic midfielder, who won promotion to the Championship with the Owls last season, becomes the Addicks’ first January addition.

After sealing his switch, the 25-year-old said: “I’m buzzing to get it over the line and I’m very happy to be here. I can’t wait to show the fans and my teammates what I can do. My conversations with Michael Appleton have all been really positive and he was one of the big reasons why I wanted to come here.”

Appleton is delighted to add further quality to his engine room. The Head Coach said: “Tyreeq is six foot three and he gives us a physicality in midfield. He can play as a holding midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder because he’s got the ability to get up and down the pitch when he wants and needs to. He can do that from a physical point of view, but he’s also got the discipline to sit in there when required.

“Tyreeq has played at big clubs has been promoted twice, so he brings a lot of experience to the group as well.”

Born in Camden, Bakinson began his career at Luton Town where he progressed through the youth ranks to earn a professional contract.

The central midfielder made his senior debut for the Hatters in May 2016 and made a further five appearances before completing a move to Championship side Bristol City in the summer of 2017 for an undisclosed fee.

Successful League Two loan spells followed with Newport County and Plymouth Argyle, who he helped get promoted into League One.

Bakinson would then go on to feature 47 times and score five goals for Bristol City in the Championship before joining Ipswich Town on loan for the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

He sealed a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday in July 2022 and helped them win the League One play-offs in his debut season as an Owl.

Bakinson joins the Addicks having made 10 appearances this campaign, eight of which have come in the Championship.

The deal is subject to EFL approval.
