Greg Miller on becoming Academy Manager

Greg Miller has arrived at the club as Academy Manager after completing his notice period at Portsmouth, where he had been Academy Manager since 2021.

Miller joins with extensive experience having coached a number of youth sides north of the border before joining Barnsley as Head of Coaching in 2017. He then progressed to Portsmouth as Academy Manager four years later.

Miller replaces Tom Pell, who left the club to join Tottenham Hotspur at the end of 2025. Legendary Academy Director Steve Avory has been running the academy on an interim basis and played a key role in Miller's appointment.

"It's been extremely hectic, which is what I like and what I expected. It's been really enjoyable," Miller said.

"I've have taken in games from three different age groups, I've seen training from four or five different age groups to allow me to build a bit of a picture about all of the fine work that's going on at the football club.

"When I made the decision five plus years ago to go into academy management [at Portsmouth], it was a case for me to really test myself and try and take an academy that had been struggling, and put my stamp on it alongside that of the staff.

"We had always played Charlton's U18s in friendlies, and I admired the facilities and the playing talent and the level of staff and experience Charlton had," he added.

"I was Head of Coaching at Barnsley for three seasons in the same games programme as Charlton. It has always been a club that other clubs look at with envy, because of the pathway of players and the facilities. I'm delighted to be here and take it forward in the future."

"I think if you ask any staff member in the academy what fuels them, it's seeing success for young people. There is no better advocate for an academy than seeing players reach the first-team from it," Miller explained.

"That's something that really fuels everyone within an academy and it's why we're all here to try and sustain the record the club have so far.

"[Academy management] is probably not something that one person can do in isolation, it's why you rely on your quality of staff that you have at your disposal."

Miller spoke highly of the staff he has encountered at Sparrows Lane so far, and has found the presence of Avory invaluable.

"I've been speaking to Dave Huzzey a lot about the loans, the structure and the pathway that we provide academy players at the end of the programme, but equally I was watching U8s the other night. It's critical that I have these relationships with the wonderful staff at the football club, because I have to take information from that.

"I got a chance to watch three games last week and they're invaluable to me to build an early picture alongside the discussions I have with the staff.

"Prior to starting here, Steve [Avory] and I had conversations over the phone and we met in person to get a brief of what the situation was.

"When someone has the experience and has proven track record that Steve has, it would be foolish of me not to lean into that support and he's been fantastic."
