Jones: 'It’s an absolutely massive three points for us'

Nathan Jones speaks to the press

Nathan Jones was delighted with his side’s performance as they claimed an impressive 2-1 win over fifth-placed Barnsley at the Valley on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s an absolutely massive three points for us,” he said. “A really good performance.”

“They’re in the play-offs, they score goals freely and they’ve got one of the best away records. So for us to win the game, we’re delighted.”

It was another stellar performance from Alfie May, and the gaffer wasted no time in praising his number nine.

“Alfie took his chances really well,” he said. “On the counter we were a constant threat and could have had more. And then we miss a penalty in injury time which would have given us a 3-1 win.

“It was really pleasing. A lot of stuff we can do better but I’m really pleased with everyone today.”

After a draw against Stevenage where neither side really got going, the boss was satisfied with his team’s response.

“We were much more front-footed today than we were against Stevenage,” he said. “We were much more Charlton Athletic than what we were against Stevenage, and that’s what we’re worried about.”

It has been a fantastic turnaround under Jones, who shared what he believes is necessary to improve a club’s fortunes.

“Every part of your life... literally every part of your life,” he said. “I live away from family. Anyone who works at the football club knows the hours we do, knows what we watch, knows how we prepare, know how meticulous we are on every aspect of what we do.

“How we eat, how we sleep. If you want to raise standards then you have to set those standards and you have to live those standards.”
