Jones: 'The point is probably a fair result'

Nathan Jones' post-match interview

Nathan Jones felt that it was difficult to assess the performance of his Charlton side in their 1-1 draw at Fleetwood Town, given the conditions the match was played in – freezing cold, swirling wind, and a difficult playing surface.

“It was a brutal game,” he told CharltonTV. “The conditions, the pitch, made it very, very difficult.

“There was a lot of honesty out there, but very little quality, and the point is probably a fair result.”

Despite a draw feeling fair, Jones was frustrated that his side could not hang on for the win. “It’s probably an even result,” he said. “But when you lead going into the 85th minute then you expect to see it out.”

“I’m really disappointed because we lost the header, we didn’t go with the runner, we lost another challenge, then another challenge, and then they tapped it in off the post. So I’m really disappointed because it was four things that could have happened better, and didn’t.”

On the plus side, the Addicks stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games. “It’s another game,” said Jones. “It’s a positive point. It keeps people away from us.

“It’s just about keeping the momentum going and keeping winning. We can’t win everything.”

The boss also took the time to reflect on how the team has played since his arrival.

“I’m really pleased with the position we’re in, considering the position we were in when I came in,” he said. “We’ve had a positive reaction. We’re eight games unbeaten which, at any level in world football, is good.”

Finally, the boss took the time to thank the 551 travelling fans for their support.

“They’re phenomenal. To travel up here with the distance, the cost, the weather – it shows they’re magnificent,” he said.

“It’s just a real shame that we couldn’t have given them three points to go home with. But they’ve seen another honest display.”
