Nathan Jones praised his side after an outstanding 4-0 win at Wycombe Wanderers kept the Addicks top two hopes alive.
Charlton are now four points off second-place Wrexham ahead of the head-to-head game between the two sides on Saturday.
Speaking after the Addicksâ dominant victory Nathan Jones said: âI thought we were excellent. It was a real frenetic start from both sides but then once we got the goal I thought there was only one side that was going to win it. We got the goal, got the second one. They are a very, very good side, they have the top scorer in the league. I thought Lloyd Jones was magnificent again today to curtail him.
âAt half-time we said âwhat sort of a team do we want to be? Do we want to be a team that defends a two-goal lead and makes it edgy or do we just go after the game?â. We went after the game. Itâs a magnificent performance because we come to second place, we win 4-0, we keep a clean sheet against one of the highest scorers, one of the top strikers in the league â itâs a wonderful performance and under the pressure we were under as well.â
Lloyd Jones opened Charltonâs scoring before Luke Berryâs stunner. Matty Godden and Karoy Anderson struck in the second half to secure three points for Nathan Jonesâ side.
âSome of the goals were magnificent,â Jones said. âYou will not see a better strike anywhere in English football today than Luke Berryâs. Then there is a goalkeeping error [for Goddenâs goal[ but we have to press and work hard and get after them. Weâre away from home, weâre two up and weâre going after the game. Then it is a wonderful ball and a wonderful header to really seal the win and it didnât flatten us in anyway because I canât remember our goalkeeper making a save.â
After scoring his wondergoal Luke Berry had to come off, with Nathan Jones explaining the midfielder 'cramped up' and that they didnât want to risk playing him more minutes. The Charlton Manager added that he would speak to the referee about the sending off of Chuks Aneke in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
In keeping out Wycombe, Nathan Jonesâ side recorded a 20th clean sheet of the season to equal a club record.
He said: âWe came here last year and theyâd kept three [clean sheets] in 35 or 36 games. We only kept two in the final 16 games, which was good enough to get us to the position we finished last year but I knew it wasnât going to be good enough to get us where we want to be this season. We had to first of all sort that out, which we did and we have. Then every single week is an evolution process in terms of getting better in possession, scoring more goals, being more clinical, being more confident, being more accomplished with the ball and we are a work in progress, weâre just over a year in, I think weâre in a good place.â
