Charlton took on Newcastle in their final home game of the Barclays Championship season today.
The Geordies had the first chance of the game with Beth Lumdsen playing Freya Gregory through on goal, but Sophie Whitehouse was able to get there and clear the ball before she could finish her chance.
The Addicks then had a chance of their own to take the lead a few minutes later, after Karin Muya put in a strong tackle, but she was only able to send the ball over net.
Charlton opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Ellie Brazil’s shot was blocked, but Muya was able to win the ball back. The ball fell to Gloria Siber, who found Jodie Hutton just outside of the box. Hutton slotted it in the bottom corner, sealing a great finish.
Just before halftime, Brazil had a chance to double Charlton’s lead, after a poor back pass from Newcastle saw her in a one on one towards goal, but her shot was straight at Claudia Moan.
As the second half got underway, Newcastle put the pressure on, forcing some crucial saves from Whitehouse. After Hutton was forced to leave the pitch due to injury, Shania Hayles’ header was kept out by Whitehouse, before she was called upon minutes later to make a vital save from Lumdsen’s free kick, keeping the game level.
It was Karen Hills’ side, however, that almost found a late winner. Mary Bashford and Ellie Brazil both had chances to win the game but were only able to drag their shots wide. Charlton had another opportunity to find their second when Bashford found Brazil, who crossed it to Muya, but she agonisingly missed the ball.
Newcastle had one last chance to win it right at the end of the game, when Lumdsen had a shot from outside of the box. Whitehouse was called upon once again to make a vital save, denying the visitors from leaving with all three points. She was awarded player of the match shortly after full time.
