Sonny Carey’s start to life in the Sky Bet Championship has been impressive.

The midfielder has started every game under Nathan Jones and is pleased with how he has settled into life in SE7. “It’s been really good, it couldn’t have gone any better really,” Carey said.

With five goals in 15 appearances, it has been a stellar start to the season for the Addicks’ number 14.

“I’m loving it honestly, loving every minute,” he said. “When I hear the song out on the pitch, I always have a little smile to myself, the fans have been unbelievable. They really do make a difference to us; we can’t thank them enough.”

The Addicks currently sit ninth in the table ahead of this weekend’s meeting with Southampton.

“Anything is possible.” Carey said. “We know what we can achieve this year. Every team is a good team in the Championship, and we think that teams will say that about us as well.”

Carey’s footballing career started out at non-League side King’s Lynn Town, after being released from the Norwich City academy at the age of 15.

“It was tough at the start. [Norwich] was all I had ever known. Looking back on it now, it could have been the best thing that happened to me - it toughened me up and it shaped me from being a teenage boy to a man.”

CharltonTV’s Charlotte Richardson noted how the words ‘be relentless’ are emblazoned in the tunnel at The Valley, a mantra which Carey takes into every game.

“I’m one of those players, I’ll never quit,” said the 24-year-old. “I’ll never stop running until the final whistle, and when I got that goal against West Brom, that really summed it up. It was an unbelievable feeling to get that goal.

“It’s been everything I expected and more. It’s been brilliant, to have 20,000 fans at home every game, singing your name, it really does take you back. There is a lot more to come yet.”
