Stoppage-time delight as Addicks move to sixth

Kayne Ramsay heading home

Leyton Orient 1 Charlton 2

The Charlton fans were still singing loud and proud 20 minutes after full-time following the Addicks late comeback to beat Leyton Orient 2-1 and move into the playoff places in Sky Bet League One.

No team in England have scored more goals in stoppage time this season than Charlton's 10. Macaulay Gillesphey and Kayne Ramsay added the latest two to that tally as the Addicks came from a goal down to secure a deserved three points over playoff rivals Leyton Orient.

It is now seven wins in nine for Nathan Jones’ side ahead of the visit of Barnsley to The Valley on Tuesday.

It was a game that began slowly with Leyton Orient’s early moments coming from midfielder Jordan Brown, who headed wide after finding himself free from a corner, and later forced a save from Will Mannion.

As the first half continued, Charlton began to take control of the game, but despite finding very good positions, only created half chances. That was until the 37th minute when the Addicks probably should have taken the lead. Josh Edwards’ long throw caused havoc, bouncing off former Addick Darren Pratley and rebounding off the crossbar. Luke Berry was first on the scene and looked certain to scored but was denied by goalkeeper Josh Keeley with the goal gaping. The ball squirmed loose and but Berry’s attempt was well-blocked by Keeley.

The home side came out well to start the second half and took the lead in the 50th minute through a wonderful half volley from Brown from more than 30 yards out which flew into the top corner of the goal.

Mannion did well to keep the deficit at one just moments later, when he reacted quickly to stop Charlie Kelman’s close range effort.

The Addicks came close to finding a 57th-minute equaliser when Kayne Ramsay headed just over from a whipped Berry corner.

Six minutes later Tyreece Campbell fed Karoy Anderson in the left channel, the midfielder’s shot came off defender Brandon Cooper. Godden then blazed over after Keeley had dropped a corner.

At the other end Orient beat the Charlton press but Kelman blazed over from close range with teamsmates well position.

Ramsay then did well to head over the crossbar with Pratley’s volley looking goalbound.

More pressure came for the Addicks with Keeley making a double save to keep out a low shot from substitute Docherty and then a follow-up header from Godden.

Small then found another substitute Chuks Aneke, whose curling shot was again kept out by Orient's Player of the Match Keeley.

Charlton huffed and puffed and eventually the goals came with substitute Alex Gilbert assisting both.

Gillesphey netted the first, heading home at the back post from Gilbert’s deep corner in the second minute of stoppage time to send the away fans crazy.

The scenes after the second goal, five minutes later, were even better. Again Gilbert fired a corner to the back post and this time it was Ramsay, who connected with the ball, to send the Charlton bench and away end into pandemonium.

The full-time whistle went and the Charlton players and staff sprinted to the away fans to enjoy a vital three points together.

The Addicks will be looking to continue their excellent form back at The Valley on Tuesday when Barnsley visit.
