Charlton's U21s were beaten 1-0 by Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The young Addicks started brightly in South Wales and almost took an 11th-minute lead, but Paris Lock's wicked cross just evaded Jacob Safa at the back post.
The hosts had a golden chance of their own at the other end just before the interval when Noah Williams played through Rob Tankiewicz, who shot tamely at George Hardy.
Cardiff took the lead on 56 minutes in fortuitous fashion as Mannie Barton's shot took a deflection off Mason Hunter and beat Hardy, who was wrongfooted.
Chris Lock's side pushed for a leveller thereafter, but were ultimately left frustrated by a resolute Bluebirds side that held on to claim all three points.
The U21s are back in action on Tuesday when they host Huddersfield Town at Sparrows Lane (KO 1pm GMT).
