Derby County 1 Charlton 1
Charlton secured a point on the road in a tense 1-1 draw at Pride Park Stadium against Derby County to extend their unbeaten streak to four games.
James Bree continued his scorching hot form finishing off an excellent team move in style to give the Addicks a first half lead but Matt Clarke scored with 11 minutes to go to secure a point for the Rams. Both teams chased a late winner but the draw was probably a fair result.
Nathan Jones made two changes from the side that comprehensively beat Blackburn Rovers at the weekend with Macaulay Gillesphey making his first start of the season, in place of the injured Josh Edwards, and Kayne Ramsay stepping in for Reece Burke who moved to the bench.
The home side started well and Amari’i Bell did well to read an early cut-back from the Rams, that could well have resulted in a second-minute goal.
For the Addicks, Charlie Kelman got the first real sight of goal but his deflected shot from range was too close to Derby stopper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
Tyreece Campbell, who looked lively, gave the home side a scare, cutting inside his defender and driving a ball wide of goal.
Charlton took the lead with an early contender for the club’s goal of the season. Kelman did wonderfully to control the ball out of the sky and played in Campbell on the left wing. The academy graduate pulled the ball back to Sonny Carey who touched into the path of Greg Docherty. The Addicks’ skipper, with his first touch, calmly set Bree arriving just inside the box, who volleyed powerfully back across goal, with perfect technique, to net his second in as many games.
While the second half started with a pace and intensity to it, neither side were able to create much. Kelman had a strike from just inside the area, beaten away by Zetterstrom.
With 13 minutes to go Thomas Kaminski made an excellent save to keep the Addicks in front, anticipating well and getting down quickly to his right to keep out Bobby Clark after the Derby midfielder had controlled well to go through on goal.
It was two minutes later that the Derby equaliser came with Clarke rising highest to head home Lewis Travis’ cross from their left.
Charlton nearly struck straight back with Harvey Knibbs just clearing the crossbar after an Addicks’ corner had fallen to him in the box.
Deep in stoppage time the ball fell to Docherty in the Derby box but his goalbound shot deflected off teammate Tanto Olaofe and wide.
The draw brings to an end an unbeaten September for Nathan Jones’ side, who start October on Saturday with a trip to Preston North End.
