Season preview: Charlton Athletic Women want to compete for promotion

Charlton Athletic Women kick-off their 2019/20 Championship campaign on Sunday, August 25th against Lewes at The Oakwood.

Tickets are on sale on the door priced £7 for adults and £4 for children.

The team, who finished third in the Championship last season, missing out on promotion by five points, have bolstered their squad for the season, bringing in a number of high profile internationals as they look to go one better this year and target promotion.

Speaking about the upcoming campaign, Charlton Women's captain, Grace Coombs, said: “Everyone’s really excited for the season ahead. Pre-season’s been tough, but things are really coming together and I think when it comes to the game, everyone’s going to be really up for it.

“I think we will compete this season. The gaffer [Riteesh Mishra] has built a really strong squad, we’ve got a lot of strength in depth which we haven’t had for the past couple of years for various reasons, so it’s exciting to see what we can do."

Combs praised Mishra and his determination to improve each season, and she insists that this year will be no different.

“Every year the gaffer’s been here, the aim for the next season has been to do better than we did last year.

"We’re not putting any pressure on ourselves, we’re just going to try and take each week as it comes, be better each week and go from there.”

Midfielder, Charley Clifford, reinforced the team's readiness to get going.

“I’m really excited for the season to start. We’ve prepared well during pre-season and the new signings have made the squad better. Training has been going well, we’ve been working hard on what our plan is and we’re excited to see it come off."

Clifford continued, praising the newcomers to the side and their desire to improve the team both on and off the pitch.

“We’ve got a new squad and they’ve already added a lot in terms of their mentality, their attitudes, they’re positive in the vibes that they bring to the team. We just feel in a stronger position now than we did last year.”
