Academy Day | How to master the Valley Gold Crossbar Challenge

On Saturday, in front of a sold out home end, Charlton fan Jason Potter will have one shot to hit the crossbar to win £5,500 in the Valley Gold Crossbar Challenge.

U13s academy player Sam Sene-Richardson has the following advice for Jason: “Just relax, try and float it in, don’t smash it, oh and bring boots!”

Sam’s advice is worth listening to, the youngster, who has been with the Charlton academy for four years, won the first ever Charlton Academy Crossbar Challenge beating competition from every age group including James Vennings, who made his first team debut earlier this season.

The challenge took place ahead of Saturday’s Academy Day which will see every academy player walk around the pitch at The Valley during half-time.

Speaking after winning the competition Sam said: “It feels really good, I never thought I’d win it against older boys. In the warm-up I wasn’t doing very well, but in the end I saved the best for the last shot.

“Competing against James Vennings, I never expected to be winning against him.”

Sam sometimes works as a ball boy on matchdays and is very proud to be apart of the Charlton academy.

He said: “It’s amazing, you know the success rate of the players coming through, so it just feels good to be at Charlton.”
