Jess King: "The attitude was spot on"

Speaking after Charlton Athletic Women's dramatic 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, new signing Jess King spoke about the game, scoring on her debut and also looked towards the season that lies ahead.

Having taken the lead, the Addicks found themselves trailing in the second half but remained determined and were able to force a late equaliser through fellow debutant Shauna Vassell. King praised Charlton's attitude despite not being able to pinch an opening day win.

"I think we did well. Obviously we went one nil up and then they were winning in the second half but I think the group felt determined to get a goal back. Obviously you don’t just want to draw, especially at home, but I think that the attitude to come back was spot on.

"We had a few chances, especially in the first half, I hit the post. I don’t like drawing but like I said the attitude was good. I think they had a few spells on top but then again so did we. It was a good battle."

Having joined in the summer, King was delighted to find the net and get off the mark so early on in the season when she opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes.

"I’m buzzing. As a new player, In a new team, in a new season, to get off the mark early with a goal, and an important one to get the draw, I’m happy. If I’m being critical I would have liked to have scored the other two chances too but I’m definitely happy getting one goal."

When asked about the opening result and the season that lies ahead, the striker explained that they are not looking too far ahead.

"As cliche as it sounds I think we’re just taking it one game at a time. We’re working on things in training both individually and as a group and I think that if we execute those things well we’ll have some success."

With the Pandemic still ongoing King admitted that the feeling of playing in a near empty stadium was strange, however went on to explain that her and the team are just happy to be back playing football.

"I loved it. It felt a bit weird because we’ve not had this for such a long time and obviously with no fans and none of our family or friends can be here to support. We’ve worked hard together as a group and the coaching staff have pushed us. We’re just buzzing to be back into it and continue it regardless of the circumstances."
