MATCH PREVIEW | Burton Albion v Charlton

Charlton return to Sky Bet League One action this weekend when they travel to the Pirelli Stadium to take on Burton Albion (3pm).

Having progressed in both the Emirates FA Cup and Papa John’s Trophy, Johnnie Jackson’s Addicks will be looking to pick up from where they left off in the third tier as they look to maintain the Caretaker Manager’s unbeaten league record.

TEAM NEWS

Long-term absentees Sam Lavelle (groin), Ryan Inniss (quad) and Jake Forster-Caskey (ACL) remain absent for the Addicks, with Jackson also expecting the trip to come too soon for Adam Matthews (calf) and Jonathan Leko (hip).

Chris Gunter (Wales) and Conor Washington (Northern Ireland) are unavailable having linked up with their respective nations for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, though Pape Souaré (hamstring) will be assessed following his withdrawal in midweek.

The hosts will be without captain John Brayford (hamstring), Sam Hughes (knee), Kieran Wallace (ACL) and Louis Moult (ankle), while Daniel Jebbison and Terry Taylor are unavailable having been called up by England U19s and Wales U21s respectively.

Jonny Smith is also ruled out as he serves a three-match suspension following his dismissal at Wigan Athletic in the Brewers’ last league outing, with the winger joined on the sidelines by defender Tom Hamer, who has accumulated five cautions this term.

THE OPPOSITION

Managed by former Addick Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, the Brewers currently sit 11th in League One with 22 points from their 16 matches thus far.

Despite having already bowed out of the Papa John’s Trophy, Burton recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory at Wycombe Wanderers in midweek, preceded by a 2-1 triumph at Fleetwood Town in the Emirates FA Cup first-round.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Charlton and Burton have gone toe-to-toe on five previous occasions with the Addicks winning three and the Brewers two.

The last meeting between the two sides came at The Valley in February and saw the visitors prevail. Mike Fondop’s strike on 25 minutes cancelled out Jayden Stockley’s early opener, before Ben Watson’s own goal eight minutes after the interval gifted the Brewers maximum points.

Charlton’s last visit to the Pirelli Stadium, meanwhile, in November 2020 proved to be one to forget as the hosts ran out 4-2 victors.

MATCH OFFICIALS

Trevor Kettle will be the man in the middle in Staffordshire on Saturday afternoon. The official last refereed a Charlton fixture in April 2021 - a 2-2 draw with Crewe Alexandra at The Valley.

Kettle will be assisted by Matthew Wilkes and Maryvn Amphlett, while Hristo Karaivanov is the Fourth Official.

COLOURS

The Addicks will be donning their home strip at Burton this weekend.
