Jackson: "It was a really, really good away performance"

Johnnie Jackson hailed his side’s all-round performance in a 1-0 win away at promotion-chasing Rotherham United.

A special goal from George Dobson, his first for the club, earned the Addicks three points and speaking to CharltonTV after the game Jackson praised his team’s showing.

He said: “It was a really, really good away performance. I would have liked maybe one or two more goals and then I could say it was a complete one but that is just being picky but 1-0 away from home, limiting the opposition to few chances really – I’m really, really pleased with it.

“I thought we defended brilliantly, especially our penalty box and our goalkeeper. We knew we’d have to and we knew we’d have period where they put you under pressure. They get a lot of penalty box entries – they’ve got the long throw, they work it up the pitch and then make you defend with crosses, long throws, free kicks, every opportunity they get to put in in your box, they do it. That was no surprise, we worked on that a lot, spoke about it a lot and I think the lads implemented it brilliantly.”

Rotherham had 60% of possession but created just one shot on goal to Charlton’s five, with the Addicks causing havoc on the counter attack.

“I felt that if we stayed in a compact shape, I thought we had a such a threat on the counter attack,” Jackson said. “They were leaving [Conor] Washington in one-v-one situations quite a lot of the time and even in the first half, we nearly broke away and scored a couple of times. I knew that we’d have opportunities – I just probably didn’t expect the goal to come about the way it did.

“I thought they [the players] were outstanding. I thought they looked really fit, really strong, full of energy, full of legs still. I did freshen it up [making five changes to the starting XI], because I knew that we would need that here but you’ve got guys that played in the week as well and they were still running at the end which was a really pleasing element of the performance.”
