Sheffield Wednesday 1 Charlton 1
Charlton moved six points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday.
The result extends the Addicks' unbeaten away run to seven games but after taking the lead through Matty Godden, Charlton will feel disappointed not to hold on for all three points.
It was an opening half with few chances. Although Sheffield Wednesday had much of the possession, it was Nathan Jones’ side that had the better opportunities.
First Lyndon Dykes got underneath a volley at the back post, sending his shot over the crossbar, after landing on a Lloyd Jones flick-on from a Harry Clarke long throw.
Then the Addicks won the ball in the Sheffield Wednesday box, Godden’s shot on the turn was blocked into the path of Greg Docherty, whose curling shot was saved well by Pierce Charles, down low to his left.
For the hosts, Max Lowe dragged wide from just outside the Charlton penalty area and the home fans felt they should have had a penalty when Reece Burke fouled Tayo Adaramola but referee Thomas Parsons judged that the foul was just outside the penalty area and gave a free kick.
Just before half-time, Godden hit the bar with an acrobatic effort from close range after getting on the end of a knockdown from another long throw from the right.
The Addicks took the lead five minutes into the second half. Lloyd Jones, still up from a set piece, headed a long ball forward into the six-yard box. Godden controlled well, took another touch, before poking home on the turn to the delight of the travelling Charlton supporters behind the goal.
Charlton nearly had a second six minutes later when Carey took the ball on a trademark run forward and from just inside the penalty area shot across goal. The ball hit the inside of the post but bounced away to safety.
Godden then cut inside on his right foot and forced a low save from Charles with a driven shot from 18 yards out.
Wednesday’s equaliser came with 13 minutes to play and Will Mannion felt he was fouled in the build-up. The ball eventually fell to Jamal Lowe in the penalty area, who teed up Gabriel Otegbayo to sweep home.
Neither side were able to find a winner and the Addicks now have a big week ahead with home games against Ipswich Town on Wednesday and Hull City on Saturday.
