DONE DEAL | Matt Penney is an Addick

Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the signing of attacking full-back Matt Penney.

The 24-year-old joins on loan from Ipswich Town until the end of the season.

Penney spent the first half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, where he started every game and scooped two Player of the Month awards.

The versatile defender, who will wear Charlton’s number 26 shirt, completed his first training session with his new teammates at Sparrows Lane on Friday and was set to be in today’s squad for the Addicks' clash at Peterborough United.

He becomes the club’s third addition of the winter window following the return of Macauley Bonne and the signing of Todd Kane.

Penney explained he is relishing the opportunity to work under Manager Dean Holden.

“I spoke to the Manager a couple of weeks ago and every conversation I’ve had with him has been brilliant,” he said. “We have shared very positive talks and I am delighted to be here now.

“I know what I’m here to do and I can’t wait show the fans what I’m about. Every time I pull on the Charlton shirt on a Saturday or a Tuesday I’m going to give 110 per cent and I will bring lots of work rate and energy. Hopefully I can help the boys with clean sheets, assists and goals to help push us up that table.”

Commenting on Penney’s arrival, Holden said: "I'm really pleased we've been able to sign Matt. He is a left-back who is solid defensively and good going forward.

"Matt joins us after playing games regularly in the top flight in Scotland and, like our other signings, is hungry to come in and show what he can do.

"I liked that he has spent time on loan at St Pauli in the second tier in Germany. St Pauli are a proper club with a loud and passionate fanbase. Going there, outside of his comfort zone, he'll have played in pressurised environments, which will be valuable experience for his time with us.

"I've spoken since I joined about using January to give our squad more balance and signing a naturally left-footed full-back, of Matt’s quality, was extremely important."

Owner and CEO Thomas Sandgaard added: “Adding a left-back to the squad was a key objective during this transfer window, so I'm really pleased we have been able to sign Matt. He is a good defender with valuable experience and I'm looking forward to watching him at Charlton.”

The Chesterfield-born defender joined Sheffield Wednesday at the age of eight and signed his first professional contract in October 2015.

While at Hillsborough, Penney took in loan spells with Bradford City and Mansfield Town before spending the 2019/20 season on loan in Germany with FC St. Pauli, where he made 17 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga.

He joined Ipswich in the summer of 2021 having earned 32 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, 28 of which came in the Championship.

After enjoying 26 outings in his debut season with the Tractor Boys, Penney completed a temporary move north of the border to Motherwell, where he impressed during 16 top-flight appearances.
