DONE DEAL | Tennai Watson joins the Addicks

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of versatile full-back Tennai Watson.

The 26-year-old, who can play right-back, left-back or as a wing-back, has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Addicks.

He becomes the club’s eighth summer signing, following the arrivals of Harry Isted, Lloyd Jones, Alfie May, Panutche Camará, Tayo Edun, Terry Taylor and Chem Campbell.

Watson said: “I’m really pleased to have signed. Charlton are a big club with an ambition that aligns with mine. The main thing for me is to get playing, try and impact the team in as positive a way as I can and, as a group of boys, achieve something this season."

Technical Director Andy Scott added: “Tennai is a player I have been aware of since his days at Reading. He is a young defender with all the attributes we are looking for in a full-back. He is athletic, technically sound, defends well and enjoys getting into forward areas.

"He is hungry to come and challenge for the full-back positions against our two very talented players already at the club in Nathan Asiimwe and Tayo Edun. In those three we have competition for places with exciting, young, hungry players with excellent attitudes and ambition.”

Born in Hillingdon, Watson came through Reading’s academy, progressing to the first team and making four Championship appearances. He had loan spells at AFC Wimbledon and Coventry City before joining MK Dons permanently in 2021.

After two seasons at MK Dons, he left the club this summer after making 58 League One appearances to bring his total League One appearances to 85.

Watson, who has previously played alongside new teammates Michael Hector - at Reading - and Terell Thomas - at AFC Wimbledon - will wear the number 18 for Charlton this season.
