Charlton 1 Sheffied United 0
The Addicks sealed their first league win of 2026 on Saturday afternoon, as they beat Sheffield United 1-0 in an eventful encounter at The Valley that saw the visitors finish the game with nine men.
The Blades started strongly, as they won a series of corners in front of the Covered End in the opening minutes. Patrick Bamford went to ground under pressure from Karoy Anderson and searched for a penalty, but saw his appeals waved away.
Thomas Kaminski pulled off two excellent early saves to deny Bamford and Tom Cannon in the opening 15 minutes.
The first half kicked into action when Djibril Soumaré was sent off for a reckless challenge on Harvey Knibbs, that resulted in the Addicks' midfielder being stretchered off the pitch, with Sonny Carey replacing him.
The cards were flying, and the Blades were reduced to nine men in first-half stoppage time. Japhet Tanganga saw red for a flying challenge on Carey.
Nathan Jones made a double change at the break, as Tyreece Campbell came on in place of James Bree, and Lyndon Dykes was introduced in place of Charlie Kelman for his Charlton debut.
Carey struck to open the scoring for the Addicks on 46 minutes, as Charlton took advantage of the Blades’ depleted back line. Lyndon Dykes got on the end of Macaulay Gillesphey's long ball, and did superbly well to nod down to Carey. The midfielder's first-time strike went beyond Michael Cooper and into the back of the net.
Miles Leaburn had a chance to put the Addicks two goals ahead. The striker got away from the Sheffield United defence and found himself one on one with Cooper, who managed to nick the ball away from Leaburn and send it out for a corner.
Charlton were able to see the game out, keeping an eighth clean sheet in the process and securing an important three points.
