Karen Hills was positive about her team despite the 2-1 loss at Ashton Gate to Bristol City.
Hills said that the team knew the challenge that was going to face them, but was proud of her team and the chances they created. She said: "We always knew coming here was going to be a hard game. Bristol are a fantastic team and got some very, very good players, but I thought we came here, created a lot of very good moments for ourselves."
"We were disappointed with the set piece; it was definitely, in my eyes and in my opinion, it was a foul on the goalkeeper, but the officials didn’t see it, so we’ve had to keep going. But then the bottom line for us is that we did create enough opportunities."
The Addicks went 2-0 down before getting back into the game and having chances to equalise in the dying embers. The second half performance felt like it should have been enough for a point, but it sadly was not to be.
"At the end of the day its a football match that, [in] the second half, we should take a lot of pride in. We showed a lot of character, and we kept fighting right until the very end and obviously, a set piece at the end for us could have gone in the back of the net, hit the crossbar twice, and then we had a set peice a free kick. But listen, it’s another opportunity for us to put it right next week."
Gillian Kenney scored the Addicks only goal of the game, set up by Mary McAteer. Neither started, but both came off the bench to make an impact. Hills said that the squad all know their roles and how they contribute to everything the team does.
"The group, everyone knows their role and responsibility when they come on, and I thought the game changers made a huge impact in a really crucial time of the game. I definitely thought today was probably a good footballing display from us and something that I’m proud of.
"The girls were calm in those moments, again created some good moments, and then obviously I'm really pleased that Gillian was able to get on the score sheet."
Charlton Women now have a week to get ready for the next game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, March 29. Despite the loss, Hills and her players will prepare and get ready to go again to change the fortunes from this week.
Hills said: "The prep stays the same, the players need, now, time to rest and recover, which they will do over this week. We’ll have a game plan ready for Palace. Palace, again, are another fantastic team, a team that’s going to give us different challenges, definitely to what Bristol did today.
"But we’ll set the players up, we’ll be ready for those challenges, and these players are going to give absolutely everything as they do week in week out."
