Harvey Knibbs has scored at The Valley before, as an opposition player, but had never been on the winning side at Charlton’s home, until Saturday.
The 26-year-old netted the winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time as the Addicks beat Watford 1-0 at The Valley on their return to the Championship.
“I don’t think I dreamt it any better than that!” he said. “Last night [Friday] I couldn’t really sleep that well because I was just thinking about the opening day, full atmosphere, Charlton debut, Championship debut, it couldn’t have gone better. I thought the boys were outstanding and realistically their hard work allows me to come into the game like it was and win it for us really.
“It’s a bit of a blur now, with all the celebrations but I had to stay focussed, know my job and know how much the lads had grafted. The fact I was able to come on and do my job makes it easier for everyone.”
Knibbs explained that manager, Nathan Jones, has talked all week about finishers, not substitutes, remaining focussed and being ready to play their part.
The goal was scored in front of the Covered End and Knibbs celebrated his first goal with his teammates and the Charlton fans.
He said: “It was unbelievable [hearing the sound when the ball hit the net]. It could be one of the best moments of my career so far. It’s definitely a pinch me moment in front of that end.
“I’ve only been here a week but it feels like I’ve been here a year – that’s what kind of dressing room it is. Success leaves clues and the fact that this team and staff have got a promotion shows how tight-knit it is. The way they’ve welcomed me allows me to feel comfortable and be able to put in a performance like that, so it is credit to the boys.”
