In their final game of the season, Charlton unfortunately fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Sunderland in a spirited contest that saw chances at both ends, with a late free-kick from Olivia Mitchell Ramon proving only a consolation.
Sunderland opened the scoring early, capitalising on a missed opportunity from the Addicks in the 9th minute, when McMahon sent her effort wide. Just moments later, Sunderland struck at the other end to take the lead.
Charlton pushed for an equaliser, with good chances throughout the first half. Mitchell Ramon found herself with a great opportunity just past the half-hour mark, but the flag went up for offside as her chipped effort drifted wide.
Sunderland ended the first half on the front foot, forcing a strong save from the Charlton keeper on the brink of halftime.
The second half began with more pressure from Sunderland, but King once again came to the rescue with a confident save. Cofie stood out with a solid defensive effort in the 49th minute, keeping the Addicks in the game.
Charlton’s best chance of the half came when Obeng found space in the box, but her shot agonisingly went wide. Moments later, a mistake from Baron in her own half allowed Sunderland to break and double their lead with a composed finish into the far corner.
McHahon tried to respond with a determined run and strike, but it went straight at the Sunderland keeper.
The Addicks were finally rewarded deep into stoppage time, as Olivia stepped up and curled a stunning free kick into the net in the 93rd minute. However, it came too late to inspire a comeback.
Despite a valiant effort, the game finished 2-1 to Sunderland.
