Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Tom McIntyre on loan from Portsmouth until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
The versatile left-footed defender, who is also capable of operating in midfield, becomes the Addicks’ second deadline day signing following the arrival of attacking midfielder Alex Gilbert this morning.
Manager Nathan Jones commented: "Tom is a centre-half with a load of experience. He got in the Reading side as a young player and has played in the Championship for the majority of his career. He’s a real good footballing centre-half, one that can develop play for us and one that has real good experience and pedigree for his age. We’ve been able to strengthen and add a bit more balance to our defence with him being left-footed."
McIntyre said: "It’s a brilliant feeling. It’s been a late one, one that was really appealing to me. As soon as I heard that there was a bit of interest from Charlton, I was really excited to get it done."
Technical Director Andy Scott added: "We’re really happy we’re bringing Tom in. He’s a real competitor. We’ve had some very impressive reports on him as a character - he really wants to come in and prove his worth. He’s left-footed, a good footballer, brave - he’s played at full-back, centre-back and as a holding midfielder. It’s a really good opportunity for him and for us."
Born in Reading, McIntyre joined his hometown club at the age of eight and progressed through the youth ranks to sign his first professional contract in the summer of 2016.
The defender earned his senior debut in December 2018 in the Royals’ Sky Bet Championship fixture against Rotherham United, playing the full 90 minutes despite fracturing his skull during the early exchanges.
He made 28 appearances in the 2020/21 season and scored his first Reading goal in a 2-1 victory at home to Luton Town on Boxing Day 2020.
The Scotland youth international was rewarded with a new contract in the summer of 2021 and he would go on to feature 117 times for the Royals before joining Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee in January 2024.
The 26-year-old joins the Addicks having made 13 appearances for Pompey this season.
McIntyre could make his Charlton debut on Saturday when Stevenage visit The Valley. Click here to purchase your tickets now!
