U23S | Euell salutes players after Premier League Cup victory

George Jones reports

Jason Euell was full of praise for his U23s squad after their Premier League Cup win against Fulham at the DGS Marine Stadium on Monday night.

Two goals from Josh Umerah and one from Joe Aribo earned the Addicks their victory, which moves them onto four points from three matches in Group F.

And Euell was delighted with the application of his players against the Category One club.

“We were very, very pleased,” he said. “The overriding objective we set out at the beginning was, of course, to go and win the game.

“Middlesbrough won their game before we played, which moved them on to six points and it was about us getting a win to keep ourselves in and amongst it going into the final three group matches.

“We got a result and the way we did it – it was about us starting fast and having a good tempo – was really pleasing.”

The Addicks held a two-goal lead at half-time, which laid the foundations for them to extend their impressive run of form.

“We know how good we are and how good we can be,” said Euell, who’s side have only lost one of their last 15 matches. “We’re on a good run and it is only the Middlesbrough game that we have lost of late.

“It was about us keeping that momentum going and taking it into all of the competitions that we are involved in. It was important that we got the result – it keeps us in touch – and now, going into the new year, we know that we’re in a good position to qualify for the next round.”
