Charlton’s U18s started 2019 in rip-roaring fashion by hitting Coventry City for six in Professional Development League 2 South on Saturday morning.
The Addicks raced into a four-goal lead before half-time at Sparrows Lane, with a double from Kareem Isiaka as well as strikes from James Vennings and Kasim Aidoo putting them in control.
A second Vennings goal made it five just after the break and Aaron Henry rounded off the scoring by netting a sixth 15 minutes from time.
The victory lifts Sergei Baltacha’s side to fifth in PDL2 South and they are next in action on Saturday when they travel to third-placed Queens Park Rangers.
Charlton started brightly but had to wait until the 23rd minute to break the deadlock. After Ryan Godding had won possession in midfield, he found Euan Williams, who drove forward before finding Vennings inside the box and he drilled a low strike into the corner of the net from a tight angle.
It was a good strike from the young midfielder and the Addicks made it two with half an hour on the clock. Richard Chin saw a close-range strike bravely blocked by a man in Sky Blue but Isiaka was perfectly placed to head home the rebound.
Two minutes later, the Addicks forward got his second and his team’s third when he curled a brilliant, left-footed strike into the corner and they would grab a fourth goal before half-time.
Left-back Aidoo sent a low free-kick into the Coventry box and it missed everyone and trickled into the far corner.
Charlton had the match won by half-time and they netted their fifth goal on 48 minutes. Godding broke forward from his regular holding-midfield role and saw a pass deflected into the path of Vennings, who made no mistake in notching his second goal of the day.
Fifteen minutes from time, it was six. Substitute Henry played an excellent one-two with Isiaka on the edge of the box before burying his low strike into the corner of the net.
