Bowyer on win at Doncaster, conceding a late goal, the change of formation and the Charlton fans

Charlton boss spoke to the press after today’s 2-1 win at the Keepmoat Stadium against Doncaster Rovers in the Sky Bet League play-off semi-final first leg.

His full press conference will be available on Valley Pass shortly. Below are some of the talking points.

On the result…

“If you’d have said to me that we’re going to be going back to The Valley with a one goal lead then I would have bitten your hand off. My lads gave me everything today and put their bodies on the line.”

On conceding a later goal…

“It’s disappointing because I think we worked so hard and we shut up shop well. They didn’t really get too many chances. Their threats we nullified them. It’s disappointing to concede at the end after all the hard work and the effort the lads had put in but the positive side is that we’re going back home with a one goal lead.”

On playing a 3-5-2 formation rather than his favoured 4-4-2 diamond…

“When we played them here they kept hitting us on the break, we were our worst enemy really. When we were in possession they just hit us on the break so we had to nullify that. We have to respect whoever we play against. Every team has got strengths and weaknesses, so we had to change it and play three at the back and for me it worked.”

On the 3,688 Charlton fans in the Keepmoat Stadium…

“You can’t fault them. They’ve been outstanding all season. The way the club has come back together, the fans and the players, it’s great to see. I can assure you when I first came in 18 months ago, it wasn’t like this. We didn’t have a following like this.”

His full press conference will be available on Valley Pass shortly. Valley Pass costs just £6.50 a month and over the next few days will include post-match interviews with Josh Parker and Albie Morgan.
