Karen Hills: "Having fans in the stadium with us really spurs us on"

Charlton Athletic Women Manager Karen Hills previews Sunday’s FA Women’s Championship clash against Sunderland at The Oakwood in Crayford (2pm).

“We’re looking forward to it. We’ve had a little bit of a break from our last match against Lewes and we’re looking forward to getting back to it and the players are excited to get back into competitive football.”

“We’ve got on with things that we needed to do, in terms of the players that remained here. We’ve got on with a lot individually as a collective group. It always gives us a bit of time to reflect as a smaller grouper and we are really pleased with what we have done. The girls worked really hard and we have got some concepts in place that have really moved us forward.

“Bristol was a tough game for us. They were a very good side and we have to work very hard to get that late winner. It’s not going to be simple in games going forwards and we have got to try and compete and put in better performances from minute one.

“Sunderland are a very good side. They are very well organised and are very well coached. They haven’t conceded many goals so we know what their strengths and weaknesses look like but we have to focus on ourselves. We are a new team and we are still building and finding a way that really works for us. We’re looking forward to playing Sunderland and we know that we’ll need to be at the top of our game to get something from it.

“You want to go into every game with that winning mentality and having fans in the stadium with us really spurs us on. I would encourage all the fans to continue showing their support for the women’s team because that support really does motivate the girls to do that little bit extra. You saw with the 94th minute winner against Bristol, the team doesn’t give up. That’s really pleasing to see, we’ll look forward to Sunday’s game and hopefully the score will take care of itself.”
