Jodie Hutton bagged a brace as Charlton’s women helped themselves to a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
Hutton found the net with goals either side of half time to ensure it would be yet another fruitful trip to the north east as the Addicks continue their unbeaten run, having not tasted defeat in the league since last November.
The Londoners had much the better of the first half and went close to an opener in the 11th minute when Mary McAteer saw a shot saved from close range, before taking the lead eight minutes later in the quite some style.
With a cross being headed clear as far as the edge of the box, Hutton took a single touch to tee herself up before calmly sending an unstoppable strike into the top right-hand corner.
It was a goal that put a stamp on Charlton’s dominance in the first half and they would head into the break with a fully-deserved advantage.
Sunderland saw more of the ball in the second half without really threatening as the Addicks defended their lead impeccably.
And at the other end, Hutton was proving she was in the mood when she smashed a fee-kick off the crossbar from 25 yards as she looked to better her earlier goal.
She would eventually secure her brace, this time from close range as she doubled her side’s advantage in the 68th minute. McAteer’s cross was expertly delivered to the far post and Hutton was on hand to head home her second of the afternoon and ease Charlton towards three points.
The only blemish on a positive afternoon came late on when captain Kiera Skeels was forced off with an injury, but Karen Hills’ side can now enjoy taking top spot in WSL2 and an enjoyable trip back from the north east with maximum points for the second consecutive week and the third time already this season.
The Addicks return home next weekend as they welcome Sheffield United to The Valley.
